Three more journalists take SABC to court

Three more of the dismissed SABC journalists have  taken the public broadcaster to court.

Trade union Bwmawu confirmed on Friday it had filed papers on behalf of Busi Ntuli and Lukhanyo Calata.

Vuyo Mvoko —  whose freelance contract with the corporation was terminated — also confirmed he has filed papers.

This follows the action taken by four of their colleagues – represented by the Solidarity Union – in the Labour Court this week

The four — Krivani Pillay‚ Jacques Steenkamp‚ Foeta Krige and Suna Venter — were handed letters of dismissal on Monday . A day later, Ntuli and Calata learned of their dismissal, with immediate effect.

The SABC insists its decision to fire the journalists is justified.

During court proceedings yesterday, the company’s lawyer said the journalists’ public comments against the broadcaster’s editorial decisions had led to their axing.

But Steven Budlender, the lawyer representing the four journalists, said the SABC’s actions amounted to bullying.

“Let there be no doubt, my clients were dismissed [because] they criticised the policy, because they criticised the suspension of some of them, and because they criticised SABC management,” he said

Judgement was been reserved on the matter.
